So, this whole coconut oil versus olive oil for skin thing… I kept hearing people rave about one or the other. Some swore by coconut oil, said it was a miracle. Others were all about olive oil, like it was some ancient beauty secret. I got pretty curious, you know? My skin was feeling a bit blah, especially during that dry spell we had last winter. I figured, heck, I’ve got both in my kitchen, why not give it a real go and see for myself?

My Little Experiment Setup

Alright, so here’s what I did. I decided to dedicate a full month to this. Seemed like a fair amount of time to see any real changes. I didn’t want to get too complicated, so I picked one oil for two weeks, then switched to the other for the next two weeks. I mainly focused on using it as a body moisturizer, right after my shower when my skin was still a bit damp. Sometimes I’d use a tiny bit on my face too, but I was a bit more cautious there.

Week 1 & 2: Coconut Oil Time

  • First off, the smell. I actually kinda like the smell of coconut, so that was a plus.
  • It felt pretty good going on, a bit greasy at first, I won’t lie. But it seemed to soak in okay after a few minutes, especially if I didn’t use too much.
  • My skin, especially on my arms and legs, felt softer pretty quickly. That was nice.
  • But, and this is a big but for me, after about a week, I started noticing a few little bumps on my shoulders and back. Nothing major, but definitely new. And on my face? Yeah, a couple of small zits popped up. Not a fan of that.

Week 3 & 4: Switching to Olive Oil

  • Okay, olive oil. The smell is… well, it smells like olive oil. Not bad, but not exactly a spa scent, you know? I made sure to use extra virgin, the good stuff I use for salads.
  • This stuff felt a bit heavier than the coconut oil going on. Took a little longer to rub in, and I definitely felt a bit more “oily” for a while.
  • But here’s the interesting part. While it felt greasier initially, my skin seemed to just drink it up over time. It felt super moisturized, like, deep down moisturized.
  • And those little bumps I got with the coconut oil? They started to clear up. My face also seemed happier with the olive oil. No new breakouts, and it actually looked a bit more…glowy? If that makes sense.

So, What’s the Verdict for Me?

Alright, after my little experiment, here’s where I landed. For my skin, and I gotta stress that, because everyone’s different, olive oil was the winner for all-over use, especially on my face.

The coconut oil wasn’t terrible for my body, especially the drier parts like my elbows and knees. It did make them soft. But it just seemed a bit too much for areas prone to any kind of clogging, at least for me. I think it might be what they call ‘comedogenic’ or something – basically, pore-clogging for some folks.

Olive oil, on the other hand, while a bit heavier feeling at first, just seemed to agree with my skin better in the long run. It felt more nourishing without causing any irritation or breakouts. I still use it sometimes, especially in winter when my skin gets really parched. I just make sure to give it time to soak in before I put on clothes.

So yeah, that was my journey. No fancy science, just me, my skin, and two bottles of oil. If you’re wondering which one to try, maybe do your own little test. You might be surprised what works best for you!
