So, about this hammer press thing. Been doing ’em for a good while now, and figured I’d share what went down when I first got into ’em. It’s not some magic move, but it’s got its place, at least for me.

I remember I was hitting a wall with my regular shoulder stuff. You know, the usual overhead presses, dumbbell presses. Just felt like I was spinning my wheels. My shoulders weren’t really growing, and my strength was just stuck. Flatlined. It’s a real pain when that happens, makes you question everything you’re doing in the gym.
So, I started digging around, looking for something to shake things up. Came across the hammer press. Palms in, press up. Seemed simple enough. Gave it a shot. First time, man, it felt plain weird. Like, really awkward. My balance was all over the place. One arm felt like it was doing all the work, the other was just along for the ride. Definitely wasn’t love at first lift, I tell ya.
I started off pretty light, way lighter than my usual dumbbell press. Had to. My form was sloppy, and I didn’t want to mess up my shoulders. So, I focused on a few things:
- Keeping it slow and controlled. No bouncing, no jerking.
- Really trying to squeeze at the top, feel the muscle.
- Making sure both arms were moving together, not one lagging behind.
There were times I thought, “This is dumb, this ain’t doing anything.” The pump wasn’t the same as a regular press. It felt different, hit the shoulders in a different spot, or maybe just a different way. But I’m a stubborn fella. Decided I’d give it a fair shake, stick with it for a few weeks, see what happened. Couldn’t hurt, right? My old routine wasn’t exactly setting the world on fire.
So, I kept at it. Hammer presses became a regular part of my shoulder days. Slowly, very slowly, I started to get the hang of it. The movement got smoother. I could add a little bit of weight, five pounds here, five pounds there. Nothing crazy. Still focusing on that mind-muscle thing, trying to make every rep count.

And then, after a couple of months, I started to notice stuff. My shoulders, especially the front part, started looking a bit rounder. Not massive, but different. Fuller. And my triceps? Man, they were getting a good workout too. Didn’t expect that as much. Felt like my whole shoulder joint was getting stronger, more stable. Even my regular bench press felt a bit more solid. Coincidence? Maybe. But I don’t think so.
Look, the hammer press isn’t gonna turn you into a beast overnight. No exercise will. But for me, it broke a plateau. It gave my shoulders a new kind of challenge. It’s one of those exercises that I threw into the mix, and it just kinda worked its way into being a keeper. If your shoulder day is feeling stale, or your joints are a bit grumpy with the usual stuff, maybe give it a whirl. What’s the worst that can happen? You try something new. That’s how we learn, right? Just by doing.
