Alright, so the other day I was whipping up a batch of sangria. It’s my go-to when I have folks over, or honestly, sometimes just for a sunny afternoon. As I was stirring everything together, a thought popped into my head: I wonder how many calories are actually in this stuff I make?
My Go-To Sangria Method
Now, I don’t follow a super strict recipe, it’s more of a ‘what feels right’ kind of thing. I started, as I usually do, with a bottle of red wine. Nothing too fancy, just a decent Merlot this time. I poured that into a big pitcher.
Then, for that extra little something, I added a splash of brandy. Maybe about a quarter of a cup? I just eyeball it, really. After that, it was fruit time. I sliced up a whole orange and half a lemon, squeezed some of the juice in before tossing the slices into the pitcher. I also had some mixed berries in the fridge – blackberries and raspberries – so I threw a handful of those in too. They make it look nice and add a bit of flavor.
I gave it a good stir. Sometimes, if the wine is a bit on the tart side, I might add a tiny bit of maple syrup or honey, just a teaspoon or so, to balance it out. This time, the wine was fruity enough, so I skipped any extra sweetener.
I popped it in the fridge for a couple of hours. It always tastes better when the flavors have had a chance to mingle, you know?
Figuring Out the Calories – My Little Investigation
Later, while I was enjoying a glass, that calorie question came back. So, I decided to do a little informal digging. It’s not like I’m on a strict diet, but it’s good to be aware, right?
I started thinking about the main ingredients:
- The Wine: A whole bottle. That’s the biggest chunk, obviously.
- The Brandy: That adds a bit too, definitely more concentrated than wine.
- The Fruit: Oranges, lemons, berries. They have some sugars, but also good stuff.
- Any Sweeteners: Even though I skipped it this time, if I had added maple syrup, that would count. Some recipes call for straight-up sugar or lemonade concentrate, and that would definitely push the numbers up.
I looked around a bit online, just to get a ballpark. I saw figures like, a typical glass of sangria could be around 150 to 200 calories. One place mentioned 173 calories for a standard serving. But “standard” is so vague, isn’t it? My glasses might be bigger than their “standard”!
What I realized pretty quickly is that it really, really depends on what you put in it. If someone’s making sangria with a ton of fruit juice from concentrate, sugar, and a couple of different liqueurs like triple sec, that calorie count is going to be way higher than my simpler version.
So, for my own batch, I did a rough mental calculation. The wine itself is the main contributor. The brandy adds a kick in calories too. The fresh fruit adds some, but I’m not too worried about those. Since I didn’t add extra sugar or super sweet juices, I figured my version was probably leaning towards the lower end of that range I saw, maybe around 150-ish per glass, give or take, depending on how generous my pour was.
It wasn’t an exact science, more like an educated guess based on what I put in. But it was interesting to think about. It’s still a drink I’ll enjoy, but now I have a slightly better idea of what’s in my homemade glass. Definitely makes you think twice if you’re going for that third refill of the pitcher, ha!
