Alright, so today I actually went and did it. I measured out one ounce of nuts. You know, you read all these things, “a serving size is 1 oz,” and I just nod along. But I figured, let’s see what this mystical 1 oz actually looks like in real life.

Getting Started – The Great Nut Expedition
First, I had to find the nuts. Easy enough, got a big bag of almonds I’ve been meaning to snack on more responsibly. Then, the real challenge: the kitchen scale. I swear, that thing hides. Found it tucked away behind some old cookbooks. Had to blow a bit of dust off it, not gonna lie.
So, I plonked a little bowl on it. Hit the ‘tare’ button – always makes me feel a bit professional, that does. Then, the moment of truth. I started adding almonds. One by one, almost like I was counting treasure.
The Actual Measurement and the “Huh” Moment
I watched the little numbers go up on the digital display. 0.3 oz… 0.6 oz… it felt like it was taking forever. Or maybe I was just impatient. Finally, it ticked over to 1.0 oz. I stopped.
And I looked. And I thought, “Huh. That’s it?”
Seriously, it wasn’t a ton of almonds. I mean, it was a decent little pile, don’t get me wrong. But my usual “grab a handful” technique? Oh boy. That’s probably been more like two or even three ounces sometimes. No wonder!

- My usual handful: Probably way over 1 oz.
- The measured 1 oz: Looked a bit… restrained.
- The effort: Felt like a lot for a small snack.
Why Did I Even Bother With This?
You might be wondering why I even went to this trouble. Well, I’ve been trying to be a bit more mindful about what I’m eating, not go crazy with diets, but just be aware. And portion sizes are a big part of that, right? It’s so easy to overdo it, especially with things like nuts because they’re “healthy” but also super calorie-dense.
It’s like that time I tried to figure out what a “serving” of pasta actually was. Cooked up what the box said was one serving, and it looked like something you’d feed a toddler. I was like, “You’ve got to be kidding me.” This nut thing wasn’t that dramatic, but still an eye-opener.
So, yeah. One ounce of nuts. Done it. Seen it. It’s a bit of a pain to measure things out all the time, but I guess it’s good to recalibrate your eyeballs every now and then. Makes you think, doesn’t it? What else am I totally off about?
Now, the real question is, will I stick to measuring? Or will the lazy handful make a comeback? We’ll see. We shall see.
