Choosing a fitness ball stand? Here is how to pick the best one for your exercises.

Choosing a fitness ball stand? Here is how to pick the best one for your exercises.

Alright, so I’ve been meaning to sort this out for ages. That big fitness ball, you know? Great for a quick stretch, but man, it’s always rolling around. Under the desk, into the hallway, tripping hazard central. I was getting pretty sick of it, to be honest. It just looked messy too, always out of place. So, I thought, “Enough’s enough, I’m gonna make a stand for this thing.” Didn’t want anything fancy, just something to keep it put.

Choosing a fitness ball stand? Here is how to pick the best one for your exercises.

Getting Started and Gathering Bits

So, the first thing I did was have a poke around in the garage. I’ve got a pile of scrap wood from other projects – you know how it is, you keep thinking “that’ll be useful someday.” Well, today was that day for a few pieces. Found some decent bits of 2×4, a bit dusty, but solid. That’s the good stuff for something simple like this. I wasn’t about to go out and buy new timber for a ball stand, no way.

My plan was super basic. Like, a square or a cross shape on the floor, with some uprights to kinda cradle the ball. I didn’t even draw it out properly, just a quick scribble on a bit of cardboard I found. Good enough, I reckoned.

  • Scrap wood (mostly 2x4s)
  • Some wood screws I had lying around
  • My old trusty saw
  • A drill, of course
  • And a tape measure, though I wasn’t too fussy

The Actual Build Process

So, I started by measuring the ball, roughly. Just to get an idea of how wide this stand needed to be. No point making it too small, or too big either. Then I got to cutting. Chopped up four pieces for the base, to make a kind of plus-shape, or an X. Whatever you want to call it. Then four shorter pieces to act as little uprights, the bits that would actually hold the ball and stop it from doing its usual escape act.

Screwing it all together was the next job. Lined up the base pieces, drilled some pilot holes – don’t want that old wood splitting, do we? – and then drove the screws in. Made a pretty sturdy base. Then I attached the uprights, one to each arm of the base. Had to fiddle a bit to get them at a decent angle, just leaning in slightly. That was probably the trickiest part, if you can even call it tricky. More like a bit of trial and error. Eyeballed it mostly. If it looked right, it was right.

I did give it a quick sand down afterwards. Just the edges, you know, so it wasn’t rough and no one would get a splinter. Didn’t go crazy with it, just took the sharp bits off. It’s a fitness ball stand, not a piece of fine furniture, after all.

How It All Turned Out

And that was pretty much it. Took me, I don’t know, maybe an hour? Probably less if I wasn’t also drinking a cup of tea and getting distracted by the cat. Popped the fitness ball on top, and guess what? It stayed there! Solid as a rock. Well, solid enough for a big inflatable ball, anyway.

It’s not going to win any design awards, that’s for sure. It’s chunky, it’s made of mismatched wood, but who cares? It does the job. The ball is now neatly tucked in the corner, not rolling under my feet when I’m trying to work. Makes the whole room look a bit tidier, actually. Sometimes it’s the simple fixes that make the biggest difference, right? So yeah, pretty pleased with that little weekend warrior project. One less annoyance in the house.
