My Awful Experience with That Itching & Smell Down There
Okay, so a couple months back, I started noticing this insane itching in my private area. Like, seriously intense. I kept scratching, felt kinda gross about it, but hoped it would just vanish. Big mistake. After a few days, this nasty smell showed up too. Not normal at all, super fishy. Every time I went to pee or changed my underwear, it hit me. I felt embarrassed and totally uncomfortable wearing anything tight.

What I Tried Doing By Myself First
Freaked out, naturally. I thought, okay, maybe I’m just not clean enough? So I went kinda crazy:
- Doubled down on soap: Washed like crazy with this strong floral-scented soap I had, scrubbing that area like it owed me money. Huge mistake. It just got WAY more irritated and dry.
- Powder mess: Thought baby powder might help soak up stuff and stop the itching. Stuck it all over. Yeah… not great. It just felt clumpy and weird and didn’t do squat for the smell.
- Picked the wrong meds: Went to the drugstore, saw this anti-fungal cream for like athletes foot? Figured, hey, it’s a fungus? Slapped that on. Absolutely nothing happened. Zero relief.
Felt totally stuck and frustrated. Spending money on stuff that did nothing.
Enough Was Enough – Seeing My Doc
After like 10 days of suffering and wasting cash, I woke up one morning and thought, “Nope. Can’t live like this.” Called my doctor straight up and made an appointment. Gotta admit, walking into that clinic feeling like I stank was mortifying, but necessary.
My doctor was cool about it. Asked questions: When did it start? Describe the smell? Any unusual discharge? Had me lay down for an exam with that speculum thing. Swore internally the whole time.
Got tested – pee sample, swabs, the whole nine yards. Turns out it was Bacterial Vaginosis (BV), not a yeast infection like I guessed. Doc explained the difference: BV is an imbalance of bacteria down there causing the fishy odor and itch, not yeast overgrowth.

The Fix – Meds & Changing My Routine
Doc wrote me a prescription for antibiotics – pills specifically for BV. Took them exactly like told, didn’t miss a single dose. Also FINALLY figured out my hygiene routine sucked:
- Ditched the scented soap: Switched to plain, gentle, unscented soap only for the outside. No more internal washing! Ever!
- Cotton is king: Threw out all my synthetic underwear. Switched to 100% cotton. Made a huge difference in letting things breathe.
- Stop douching! Doc slapped down that idea hard. Said it destroys the good bacteria and makes BV more likely to return.
Finally Getting Relief
Took a few days after starting the meds, but slowly, the maddening itch faded. The disgusting smell vanished completely. It felt like a miracle. Took the full course of antibiotics, stuck with the new routine – gentle outside wash, cotton panties, no douching. Weeks later, still feeling normal down there. Thank goodness.
Look, if you’re dealing with constant itch and a weird smell? Don’t mess around guessing like I did. It’s miserable and you’ll waste time. See your doctor, get the right diagnosis, and take the right meds. Stop slapping random stuff on it! Worth it to feel comfortable in your own skin again. Trust me.
